WebApr 26, 2024 · Widukind (Modern German: Widuking or Wittekind) was a Germanic religious as well as the political and military leader of the pagan old Saxons and the chief opponent of the Frankish king Charlemagne during the Saxon Wars from 777 to 785. Charlemagne insisted that the Saxons forcibly convert to Christianity. Saxony has a long history as a duchy, an electorate of the Holy Roman Empire (the Electorate of Saxony), and finally as a kingdom (the Kingdom of Saxony). In 1918, after Germany's defeat in World War I, its monarchy was overthrown and a republican form of government was established under the current name.
