The classification of the folds is important because the structure produced by experimental models on deformed layered can be compared with the theoretical models of rock deformation and hence with the results on the geological processes. This nomenclature, which is widely used by structural geologists, has recently been extended to six types (Type 1-3 and Type 0 1 -0 3; Grasemann et al. 2004, J. Geol. 112, 119-125 ).
